At Netflix, data is more than numbers — it’s the foundation of how we tell stories that connect with over 270 million members across 190+ countries. As the world’s leading streaming platform, we harness billions of daily viewing signals to understand what people love and why. Our mission is to use data not to dictate creativity but to amplify it — empowering creators, engineers, and product teams to shape entertainment experiences that feel deeply personal to every member.
We’re seeking a Lead Data Scientist to join our Global Product Intelligence Team, a remote-first group of data innovators responsible for the algorithms, metrics, and models that define how viewers discover content. You’ll help drive the next generation of Netflix’s personalization and recommendation systems — using data science, behavioral analytics, and advanced machine learning to ensure every user sees the right story at the right moment.
This role is fully remote and global, welcoming candidates who thrive in distributed teams and enjoy working across cultures and time zones.
What You’ll Do
-
Design and lead large-scale data science projects that improve Netflix’s personalization systems — including recommendation engines, search relevance, and ranking algorithms.
-
Collaborate with product managers, machine learning engineers, and UX researchers to define how data insights translate into meaningful viewer experiences.
-
Build and validate predictive models that identify user intent, engagement likelihood, and satisfaction patterns across global markets.
-
Lead the experimentation process for new personalization features — including A/B testing, causal inference, and user modeling.
-
Develop frameworks that connect creative metadata (genre, tone, narrative elements) with behavioral metrics to uncover what truly drives engagement.
-
Mentor and guide junior data scientists, fostering a culture of curiosity, rigor, and innovation.
-
Present findings and strategic recommendations to Netflix leadership, content, and engineering teams.
Skills & Qualifications
-
PhD or Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
-
8+ years of experience applying statistical and machine learning techniques to real-world business problems.
-
Deep understanding of personalization systems, recommender algorithms, and predictive modeling.
-
Advanced proficiency with Python, SQL, and frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn.
-
Experience with large-scale distributed systems (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, BigQuery).
-
Strong grasp of experimental design, A/B testing methodologies, and causal inference techniques.
-
Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate complex analytical findings into actionable business insights.
-
Proven ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams in a global, remote environment.
Who You Are
You’re a data scientist who thrives on curiosity and complexity. You see data not just as a technical challenge but as a way to tell human stories. You’re comfortable in ambiguity and driven by impact — able to balance deep technical rigor with a sense of creative intuition.
At Netflix, you’ll be encouraged to explore unconventional questions:
If those questions excite you, you’ll find a home here.
Impact and Opportunities
This isn’t just another data science role — it’s a chance to redefine how billions of hours of storytelling are experienced. You’ll help shape the backbone of Netflix’s personalization engine, which influences everything from the thumbnails you see to the recommendations that introduce you to your next favorite series.
You’ll also collaborate with content and creative teams, helping them understand audience engagement from a data-driven perspective. Your insights will directly influence what we produce, how we promote it, and how members around the world discover stories that matter.
Why Work at Netflix
